May 18, 2018 · To spread the thinset, we used the ¼” square notch trowel (listed under supplies above) and then rolled the Schluter Ditra XL mat out (white side down!) over the thinset. Making sure the Schluter Ditra XL mat is thoroughly embedded in the mortar is a must. We used a grout float to help us push the mat down into the thinset firmly and evenly.

The thinset won't dry. Unmodified thinset cures, which is not the same as drying with air, so that's why you use it in between the Ditra and tile. You use modified between the plywood and Ditra because you need that to bond to the plywood, and the plywood will allow air in to dry the thinset. A bag of good unmodified thinset is not expensive.

Sep 08, 2015 · For large tiles, you are going to want to use an unmodified thinset that specifically says it’s ok for large tiles. The one I prefer is Bostik Ditraset. It can be used for any size tile and works great with Schluter products. I’ve never found it at a box store though.
